Petit Cafe

Fantastic New Menu and Fresh Options! I visited this cafe and was thoroughly impressed with their updated menu. Besides their delicious coffee, they now offer a great variety of seasonal and fresh fruit and vegetable juices. The veggie tacos are perfectly seasoned and bursting with flavor! The fresh deli items, cooked daily, add an extra touch of quality and taste. This place keeps getting better—definitely worth a visit! We were early for my wife’s appointment with her foot surgeon, so we asked a security guard for a recommendation. She pointed out the Petit Cafe and we are thrilled that she did! It’s a tiny place with some seating available (we dined in, shortly after 12:15 with virtually no wait) and is very popular for takeout with people working in the surrounding medical facilities. It’s not hard to understand why! The food, though a limited menu, is fantastic, and there are enough options for breakfast or lunch. The staff is friendly, efficient, and attentive. We split the #10, Huevos Rancheros, and the #2, Oyster Mushroom Street Tacos (plate of 3). We absolutely loved these dishes! Would happily have them again and again! We plan to be early for my wife’s next appointment just so we can return (we live about 3 hours away). The picture shows a partially eaten sample of each dish (sorry—it looked and smelled so good we forgot to take the pic before digging in!). Great café with delicious vegetarian and vegan options! The coffee is amazing, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Highly recommend for plant-based food lovers and coffee enthusiasts! My wife and I went here on a whim and were pleasantly surprised! The staff and ownership were extremely friendly and helpful! The coffee and food were delicious! I would give it 100 stars if I could! Perfect 5/7.
Sequoia Diner

Sequoia Diner in Oakland offers a satisfying breakfast experience. The servers were friendly and welcoming, making us feel right at home. We ordered a variety of dishes, and each was delicious—definitely a spot where everyone can find something they enjoy. The drinks were well-crafted too. One of our friends even joked about the food being "silverware lickin' good," which sums up our feelings nicely. While the place can get packed, especially on weekends, we found that the wait is worth it, and the staff handled our group of six smoothly. There's plenty of parking in the area, making it convenient to visit. Overall, Sequoia Diner may be small in size, but it delivers big on taste. Highly recommend coming during the week to avoid the long weekend lines!
Haddon Hill Cafe
504 Wesley Ave, Oakland
Ronnie Vanegas
Haddon Hill Cafe has become a go-to spot for me when I'm in the neighborhood, especially while waiting for my laundry two doors down. Despite some ups and downs, this place has a lot going for it. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, making it a pleasant spot to grab a bite or a coffee. Their baked goods are truly a highlight, featuring an array of delicious options from the nearby pizza place. The morning buns and sourdough cheese rolls are fantastic, and the Khachapuri is an absolute treat. While their coffee can be hit or miss, on good days, it's quite enjoyable. They also offer small batch roasted beans if you're into that. There are a few areas that could use some improvement. I wish they had a dark roast option since I'm not a fan of their lighter roasts. The croissants can be inconsistent, which is a bit disappointing. Prices are on the high side, which is understandable for a local spot, but it can make you hesitate to visit just for the coffee or baked goods. Overall, Haddon Hill Cafe has enormous potential and continues to be a place I frequent for its charm and convenience. With a few tweaks, it could easily become a five-star spot in my book.
Lane-E Kefa Coffee
77 8th St STE 182, Oakland

Raymundo Thompson
I went into Lane-E Kefa Coffee for breakfast and was pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere was welcoming with great music playing and local art on the walls, creating a perfect start to my morning. I grabbed a coffee and the House Special Sandwich. The coffee was delicious, just the right start to my day. The sandwich was a highlight—huge and packed with fresh, tasty ingredients. The English muffin was nicely toasted, crispy on the outside, which I loved. The service was friendly and helpful, making the experience even better. Although there was a bit of a wait, the freshness of the food made it worthwhile. I definitely plan to come back and enjoy more of what they offer.
Ain't Normal Cafe
5701 College Ave, Oakland
(510) 735-9990
Lokesh Green
Ain't Normal Cafe is a gem for breakfast in Oakland and a must-visit for coffee enthusiasts. The cortado and decaf cappuccino are standouts, with rich, deep flavors and exceptional caramelization. I loved soaking in the aroma before taking that first sip, and the roasted bean flavors lingered delightfully. I even picked up a bag of roasted beans for home, which smelled heavenly. While the coffee is fantastic, it's not quite at the superlative level, keeping my rating at four stars. It’s important to keep an eye on the roasted-on date for their beans, as some might be older. I did notice that some roasters don't label the roast level, which can lead to surprises. Despite this, Ain't Normal Cafe is my second favorite spot for coffee in the Bay Area, right after CoRo in Berkeley. The cafe's ambiance is lovely, especially with their sunny outdoor seating. The drip coffee is delicious, although they don't fill the cups all the way, which means enjoying it is over a bit too quickly. Their baked goods, like the scones, are incredible and made in-house, which is a refreshing change from the usual. The staff was busy during my visit, so I didn't get much help selecting coffee or wine, but this might have been a one-time thing. Despite this, Ain't Normal Cafe is easily one of the best coffee shops in the East Bay, and I plan to visit every time I'm in Oakland.
Nomad Cafe
6500 Shattuck Ave., Oakland

Jesus Weldon
Nomad Cafe is a cozy gem tucked away in Berkeley, away from the busy downtown scene. My friend and I went there craving hot, cheesy egg sandwiches with ham and bacon. The staff was welcoming and attentive, happily accommodating our custom sandwich order. The atmosphere is calm and relaxing—perfect for reading, studying, or catching up with friends over good coffee, smoothies, and sandwiches. Our sandwiches were wrapped nicely, piping hot, and fresh. We both enjoyed them, as well as the friendly service. It's clear they care about their customers, whether new or regulars. I've found my go-to spot for sandwiches, bánh mì, and coffee cravings. The pineapple tofu bánh mì is a must-try, and they adjust the spice just right. The atmosphere is also great for working. The owner always greets regulars with a warm smile, which adds a personal touch. Their breakfast sandwiches and lunch options, like the pineapple chicken bánh mì and new pesto chicken sandwich, are delicious. The coffee is solid, with the cortado being a highlight. I've also enjoyed their juices and shakes, and the iced mint matcha is a special treat. The ingredients are fresh, and the flavors are top-notch, offering plenty of vegetarian options. My partner loves their almond butter smoothie. The staff is consistently welcoming and kind, making it a great spot for a quick bite or to relax and get some work done. Highly recommend this place.
Tierra Mia Coffee
2001 Broadway, Oakland
(510) 986-0511
Karen Naughton
Tierra Mia Coffee in Oakland is a great spot for breakfast, especially if you're looking for a decent cup of brewed coffee that won't break the bank. At less than $5 for a medium cup, it's a good deal, and the quality is impressive. I loved the Pistachio Cold Brew; it's smooth, flavorful, and just sweet enough—definitely a highlight of my visit. The café itself is cute and has a charming ambiance, perfect for getting some work done with plenty of tables available. However, do keep in mind that the Wi-Fi can be a bit slow at times, and there aren't a ton of outlets. While the seating is plentiful, it's mostly tables and hard chairs, so don't expect lounge furniture. One downside was the pepino mint lemonade, which felt a bit too artificial and sweet for my taste and came with a hefty price tag. Also, the pastry selection was limited when I visited later in the afternoon, which was a little disappointing. Though the café has a slightly corporate feel, it's still a lovely spot to visit, and I would highly recommend it for a quick and quality coffee run. The staff may not be overly chatty, but they're friendly enough, and the service is efficient. If you're in the area, especially as a visitor, it's worth checking out, but maybe skip the chai tea latte.
10th & Wood
945 Wood St, Oakland
(510) 596-5842
Shanna Rasuwl
10th & Wood has become one of my go-to spots for breakfast in Oakland. It's conveniently close to my house, which makes it a great choice for early morning cravings. Their chicken biscuit and gravy breakfast is delicious—essentially a breakfast chicken sandwich that's unlike any other. The way they serve everything separately lets you build your perfect bite. The chicken, fried in cornmeal, has a unique and satisfying crunch. Another standout is the fried fish sandwich. It's perfectly crisp, and when paired with their Asian slaw and a fluffy Kaiser roll, it's a real treat. You get to choose from regular, sweet potato, or garlic fries, and the salad is also a fresh option. The biscuit sando with chicken-apple sausage is a must-try. The biscuit is exceptionally good, especially with a touch of syrup. Their banana bread is a dream—light, warm, and perfect as a breakfast dessert. And let's not forget those chocolate cookies; they never disappoint. The service here is consistently top-notch, and the staff truly pay attention to the details. They even cook the onions just right, so they’re sweet and perfectly complement the potatoes. The prices are reasonable, making it a neighborhood staple and a locals-only type of joint. While there might be a slight language barrier when ordering over the phone, the quality of the food is well worth any minor communication hiccups. It's one of the few gems in the Lower Bottoms, and I hope it sticks around for a long time.
Bakesale Betty
5098 Telegraph Ave, Oakland
(510) 985-1213
Ligia Lassiter
Visited Bakesale Betty with my family, and it was a delightful experience. I ordered the fried tofu sandwich while the rest got the fried chicken sandwiches, and I love that everyone was satisfied, especially since I'm the only vegetarian. Both my sandwich and the blueberry scone were absolutely delicious. The service was amazing, with friendly smiles all around, and the prices are reasonable. The place has a cozy, homely feel, which added to the charm. If you're near Berkeley, I highly recommend stopping by—it's a real treasure. The fried chicken sandwich was particularly impressive, with the biggest piece of chicken I've ever had on a sandwich. Normally, I'm not a fan of slaw, but this one is exceptional. The cookies here are also a treat. Other highlights include the caramel banana bread pudding, which was out of this world and not too sweet, and the buttery pecan shortbread cookies which were fantastic. Even though I'm not the biggest fan of apple pie, theirs had a good crust and might be even better warmed up with some ice cream. Overall, it's a spot I'd definitely return to!
Town Fare by Chef Michele McQueen
1000 Oak St, Oakland
(510) 318-8400
Zias Covell
Start to finish, everything at Town Fare by Chef Michele McQueen was delicious! I have fond memories of visiting her spot in the Fillmore District, SF, Gussie's Chicken & Waffles, so I was excited to try her new place for breakfast in Oakland. We kicked things off with the Bloody Mary's Revenge and the basil ginger soda—both were fantastic choices. The deviled eggs were tasty, and though you only get four, they were a great start. The fried chicken & sweet potato waffles are a must-try; the combination of flavors is just perfect. I also had the fried chicken sandwich, which was just as impressive. DJ Mark Divita played during Sunday brunch, providing the perfect musical pairings to our meal. The lively atmosphere was just right, with live music, a talented sax player, and even a screening of Black Panther with trivia questions and prizes—it made for such a fun time. To start, we had Shrimp and Country Grits that came in a flavorful gravy-like sauce. The grits' texture was thick and creamy, and the added sausage and tomatoes really set this dish apart. The Blackened Waffle came with a sweet-savory syrup that paired perfectly with the chicken. The Mac and Cheese was delicious, though a bit small in portion, and the honey glazed wings left me wanting more. Dessert was a delightful finish with cheesecake and banana pudding—the pudding reminded me of something straight from grandma's kitchen. Although they were out of crab for the gumbo noodles, the variety and quality of everything else were more than enough to ensure I’ll be coming back. The staff was friendly, and Chef Michele McQueen was kind enough to answer our questions about the food. Celebrating Black History Month with a Soulful Brunch at Town Fare was a wonderful experience. If you're ever nearby, this is the spot to visit!
Terrace Café - Oakland Hills
5891 Broadway Terrace, Oakland

Kinsey Williams
Bringing our dogs to Terrace Café in Oakland Hills has made breakfast outings so much more enjoyable. The patio is dog-friendly again, and it's a great spot to relax with a coffee or breakfast. I was impressed by the breakfast burritos; they’re packed with eggs and cheese, and the hot sauce adds just the right amount of spice. Just a tip: they don’t provide straws, so bring your own if you need one. The patio, while slanted, is covered with a tent and has wooden benches, creating a cozy outdoor atmosphere. They bring your food out when you’re dining there, which is a nice touch. I had one of their salads, and it was fantastic—something I haven't experienced in a while. I hope if it’s seasonal, they replace it with something just as good. The coffee is decent, not the best in Oakland, but it does the job. The place tends to be packed, so you might have to wait for a table. It’s not the place to hang out and work on a computer, though—big signs remind you of that. While I get it, I wish there was some flexibility on that front. Still, the vibe is amazing; it feels a bit like being in England for lunch. The food tastes homemade and delicious. This lovely spot in the Piedmont hills is a gem. The husband and wife duo who run it have done wonders with their chic coffee and gift store, offering delightful bistro options like Liege waffles. The French-style soundtrack adds to the charm. Overall, it’s a fantastic experience.
Café Gabriela
988 Broadway, Oakland
(510) 763-2233
Sharon Antonio
Café Gabriela in Oakland is a gem for breakfast and lunch. The sandwiches are incredibly tasty, and the staff is super friendly. I went with my son and we ordered the half sandwich and half salad combo, which was perfectly priced and just the right amount of food. My son loved his pulled pork adobo sandwich, and I was thrilled with the soppressata and mozzarella option. Despite the limited seating, I highly recommend this spot. I tried the fried egg sandwich with turkey and tomato for breakfast, and it was hands down the best breakfast sandwich I’ve ever had. The ingredients were fresh and everything was served on a fantastic baguette. It was so delicious you won't want to share it, even though the portion is generous. The food arrived quickly, and I was impressed with the quality. It was worth every penny. Their coffee is excellent too. I had a pour-over with their house blend, which paired perfectly with the meal. The owners' kindness and genuine care for their customers added to the experience. They also offer an amazing caprese sandwich, maybe the best in the Bay Area, and the half salad option comes with a sweet vinaigrette that's great for dipping. I truly loved it here and can't recommend it enough!
Lois The Pie Queen
851 60th St, Oakland
(510) 658-5616
Geniveva Ang
One of the top ten best breakfasts I've ever had was at Lois The Pie Queen. I ordered the "Reggie Jackson" breakfast, which included two fried chops, two eggs, two homemade biscuits, grits, and coffee for $25. It was flavorful, filling, and worth every bite. I'm definitely planning to try a slice of pie next time for the full experience of the Pie Queen. Thank you, y'all! The food here was honestly very good. I also tried the waffle with fresh fruit, and it all tasted wonderful. I highly recommend this place and will definitely be back for breakfast.
Grand Lake Kitchen - Lake Merritt
576 Grand Ave, Oakland
(510) 922-9582
Kat Pantoja
Wow, Grand Lake Kitchen at Lake Merritt was amazing for breakfast. The food was incredible with so many balanced flavors, and the prices were super reasonable, especially during their happy hour on weekdays. Service was outstanding, particularly Virginia L., who was positive and attentive. The music was at the perfect volume, and both the patio and indoor seating had great vibes. The Bloody Mariah was stellar with homemade pickled toppings, and the My Bloody Quarantine slushy was perfect for a hot day. I loved the eco-friendly straws and the great bartenders. The eggplant parmesan was amazing with a rich, creamy tomato sauce mixed with pesto. The place truly reminded me why I love Oakland. For brunch, I had the French toast made from sourdough French bread with apple sausage and an iced chai tea. Everything was delicious! The prompt and polite service made the experience even better. We managed to get a table without a reservation on a busy Friday evening, which was a pleasant surprise. A pro tip: parking can be tricky since it's Lake Merritt, so be prepared to walk a bit. But the trip is so worth it. After breakfast, we enjoyed a stroll by the lake, soaking in the vibes. I'll definitely be coming back.
Oakland Grill
301 Franklin St, Oakland
(510) 835-1176
Alison Klanow
Oakland Grill has become my go-to spot for breakfast, and it's easy to see why. The food is incredibly delicious, with generous portions that satisfy every craving. I can't get enough of the Colorado omelette—it's bursting with bacon, fresh avocado, and a heaping of salsa. The Crab Cake Benedict is another winner, with sweet, fresh crab that truly stands out. Even though it's one of the pricier items at $22, it's totally worth it. The service is top-notch, with attentive staff who make sure your coffee is always full and check in regularly. It's clear that they genuinely care about their customers. Plus, there's plenty of indoor seating, so finding a spot is never an issue, and the prices are reasonable considering the quality and portion sizes. I've been coming here since I was a kid, and it's the perfect place whether you're in need of comfort food like bacon and eggs or celebrating with a patty melt. You'll always be greeted with a smile and a hot cup of coffee. If you're looking for a reliable breakfast or brunch spot, Oakland Grill is where it's at.
Kitchen Story Oakland
5422 College Ave, Oakland
(510) 922-9443
Katrina Wooley Coggins
Visited Kitchen Story Oakland for brunch on a busy Saturday morning and sat outside. Although we had a reservation, we waited a bit for the host. I ordered the morning tacos and shared the millionaire’s bacon with friends. The morning tacos were overflowing with eggs, making them a bit hard to eat, but the crispy Yukon potatoes were delicious. My friend ordered the Korean fried chicken & waffles and found the chicken a bit bland, so we asked for sauce on the side. The cocktails, however, were tasty, especially when paired with their heavenly potato wedges. I also tried the Korean fried chicken sandwich, which was crispy, well-seasoned, and served on a soft bun with tasty seasoned fries. My friend loved her breakfast, too. The service was efficient, and despite the busyness, we didn’t wait long to be seated. One downside was our server’s lack of knowledge about the menu, as he hadn’t tried most of the dishes due to dietary restrictions, and it showed in his recommendations. Overall, Kitchen Story’s Asian fusion offerings are impressive. It’s a small, family-owned joint with lots of personality, serving fresh and hot dishes. Though some items were overpriced, the quality of certain dishes made the experience worthwhile.
Grand Lake Kitchen - Dimond
2042 MacArthur Blvd, Oakland
(510) 866-2639
La Flaquita Reyes Enriquez
I've visited Grand Lake Kitchen - Dimond a few times, usually for takeout, sticking to my regular favorites. It's a relaxed spot, not too uptight. Recently, I had the chance to dine in and try more of the menu. Sitting outside was nice for eating and people-watching. Although the food didn’t quite hit the mark for me this time, the drinks were outstanding. I tried a special off-menu cocktail that was fantastic, and I’ve enjoyed every beverage I've had here. When it comes to food, the sandwiches never disappoint—whether it’s the veggie, yadi, or beef burger. The freshly cooked donuts are a must-try. While I found the entrees could use a bit more time in the kitchen, the overall experience was still great. I’ve visited the Grand Ave location many times and always loved it, and this was my first time at the Dimond location. The food was excellent, though we experienced a longer wait than expected. The standout value was the Fried Half Chicken with two large sides, which easily fed multiple people. The sides, especially the Cauliflower salad, were fantastic. My wife loved her lamb sausage and polenta, and the grandkids couldn’t get enough of the French toast with a side of peaches. My son-in-law enjoyed his hearty turkey sandwich with cranberry spread. This location is spacious and comfortable. I’d definitely recommend it. We made a brunch reservation and it wasn’t overly crowded. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. The food featured fresh ingredients with unique twists, like the Breakfast Sando with added prosciutto—delicious. We even found parking right out front, which was a bonus. On another visit, my husband raved about the Reuben Fries all day. I had the Florentine Eggs Benedict, featuring a crisp sourdough baguette, a garlicky hollandaise, and perfectly poached eggs. The touch of green olives was a delightful surprise. The atmosphere was great, and our server was attentive without being overbearing. Overall, Grand Lake Kitchen - Dimond is a spot I look forward to visiting again.
Rockridge Cafe
5492 College Ave, Oakland
(510) 653-1567
Mario Netzel
During a visit to Rockridge Cafe, I had a delightful breakfast experience. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, ensuring my coffee cup was always full with their bottomless coffee service. The ricotta pancakes were a highlight—fluffy and flavorful, just as I’d hoped. While I was slightly disappointed by the portion size of the breakfast burrito, especially considering the $17 price tag, the overall atmosphere and service made up for it. The upbeat energy of the servers and the charming local artwork on the walls added to the enjoyable ambiance. Despite the small burrito, I left satisfied and appreciated the cafe's long-standing reputation in the community.
L'acajou Bakery and Cafe
5020 Woodminster Ln, Oakland
(510) 842-9308
Juan De Ramirez
I stopped by L'acajou Bakery and Cafe for a late afternoon visit, arriving about 30 minutes before closing on a hot Oakland Saturday. Though it wasn’t the ideal time for relaxing, I was drawn in by the promise of something local and unique. The raspberry pistachio pastry and large decaf latte were fantastic, and despite the quick heads-up about closing time, I could appreciate the French style of service—efficient and straightforward. L'acajou offers a charming, no-frills vibe that stands out among the more modern cafes popping up around Oakland. I love the outdoor patio with umbrellas, making it a perfect spot to unwind with friends after a hike in the hills. The kale vegan salad, Elvis, and their mouth-watering pastries are top-notch treats for any day. I appreciate having this gem in my community. While the service might seem brusque, it feels like part of the experience. The tables could use a bit more attention, and the flooring issue needs fixing, but these are minor details compared to the quality of the food and the cozy ambiance. For anyone looking for a genuine, local experience with delicious food, L'acajou is worth a visit. It's become one of my go-to cafes in the area, and I’ll definitely keep coming back for more of their delightful offerings.
